7 Things International Parents Need to Ask Before Appointing an Education Guardian

Your child’s wellbeing in the UK should not rest on a wing and a prayer.

Sending your child off to a British boarding school is no small feat.

Between the admissions paperwork, the visa process and the emotional rollercoaster of letting go, the last thing you want is to overlook one of the most important decisions you’ll make: who’s going to look after your child when school isn’t?

Enter the education guardian.

But before you appoint the first friendly face who replies to your email, here are 7 crucial questions every international parent should be asking.

Not all guardians are created equal.

Some are seasoned professionals. Others? Let’s just say… they’re still figuring out the school calendar.

1. How long have they actually been doing this?

No, really, how long?

Have they just launched a website this summer? Or do they actually know what happens in Year 11 (exam chaos), Year 9 (puberty plus new boarding routines), and Year 13 (UCAS, stress, and the occasional meltdown)?

A good guardian doesn’t just show up, they anticipate, because they’ve seen it all. Multiple times.

Top tip: Ask if they’ve handled full academic cycles and know when students need the most support.

Spoiler alert: It’s not during half term; it’s the night before mocks, when homesickness hits and the printer jams.

2. Are they a legal resident of the UK?

This one’s not just technical. It is vital.

If you’re appointing an individual, do they have the legal right to reside and work in the UK? Are they even allowed to act as a guardian under British law?

And let’s talk logistics, can one person genuinely care for five, ten, or fifteen students across the country?

Will they be there when your child’s flight is delayed, their homestay cancels, or they need emergency dental surgery?

A well-run guardianship organisation will have a team, not just a mobile phone and good intentions.

3. Can they communicate confidently with British schools?

It’s all well and good to say they’re ‘familiar with the UK school system’, but can they speak fluent British boarding school?

Can they decode phrases like “He’s settling in well” (which may or may not mean he’s sobbing nightly)?

Can they call up the Housemaster, speak with the Matron, and advocate for your child if something’s not quite right?

An education guardian isn’t just a chaperone. They’re your voice on the ground.

4. What happens if your guardian is suddenly unavailable?

Even the most devoted individual needs a holiday, a sick day, or, heaven forbid, a break. So ask the question:

What’s the back-up plan?

If they’re a one-person show, is there a colleague to cover them? Or does your child simply have to wait until they’re back from Ibiza?

Professional guardianship providers have rotas, contingency plans and trained staff ready to step in.

Your child gets consistency. You get peace of mind.

5. Are they available every time your child is in the UK?

Not just during term time. Not just “when it’s convenient.”

We’re talking every day your child is on British soil, including Christmas, Easter, surprise snow days, and last-minute flight changes.

Guardianship is not a part-time gig.

A proper guardian is available 24/7 when your child is in the country and not just in theory.

6. Do they have a reliable network of host families and emergency accommodation?

It’s one thing to say, “We’ll find your child a place for half term.” It’s another to actually have the right options ready.

Are their homestay families DBS checked, experienced, warm and within a sensible distance of school or airport?

Do they think to pair your introverted Year 9 daughter with a quiet academic household or are they just sticking her in whichever bed’s free?

A guardian’s host family network can make or break your child’s half-term experience.

7. Do they go beyond ticking boxes and truly care?

You can feel it from the first call. The right guardian doesn’t just manage logistics, they care.

They remember birthdays.

They check in after exams.

They send a WeChat message just to say, “You’ve got this.”

They understand your child isn’t just a name on a spreadsheet, but a whole human being adjusting to a brand-new life.

At UKGuardianship, our team of senior advisors are all mothers of brilliant daughters who’ve been through top British independent schools themselves. We’ve seen the tears, the triumphs, the teenage phases, and the UCAS drama.
